 While I agree and my personal preference would have been something darker, the color provides a nice contrast to the front. These are also the officially created images provided by Laboratory for use with Province. I will request a different background for an alternate design, however.

 could we have some other options for the backing? Maybe black? Or something that would match the landscape of the back like a gray or a green?
