 Jennifer, there are LOTS of places to get digital scrapbook background "papers" and freebies - and even more to shop!
designerdigitals.com has a weekly challenge and has 3 new freebies every Sunday - and if you join their forum you get access to all of the OLD freebies (some really cool stuff here, my designer friend Mindy is in that store)

funkyplaygrounddesigns.com has a few freebies, but almost always has things for $1 (i think new ones on thursdays)

the-lilypad.com - their bargain day is Tuesday

shabbyprincess.com - tons of WHOLE free kits (really GREAT stuff - she designed for Bo Bunny), she also has a store site - it links out from shabbyprincess. somewhere between this site and her store are tutorials - you will find tutorials/how to's at nearly every digital website.

twopeasinabucket.com has a TON of free kits and of course great fonts and for sale digital items

I'm sure that's enough links to make your head swim - and don't be intimidated, Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements aren't too bad to learn - but there are other options - The Gimp is free (google it) but it hurts my photoshop filled brain because it's *different* and Art Weaver was also free (suggested from a digi scrap magazine) and my 8 year old can use it.
